Son shows how far a mother will go for her son. Written and directed by Ivan Kavanagh (Never Grow Old, The Canal), SON stars Andi Matichak (Halloween franchise, Assimilate), Emile Hirsch (Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, Into the Wild, Milk), and Luke David Blumm (The King of Staten Island).
I am consistently amazed at the creativity in storytelling in the horror genre. Many may claim that there is nothing unique and that there are too many remakes and reboots. While this may be true, I think that we often overlook the horror genre.
Son is a unique take on satanic cults. This is one of the better ones to fit into that niche in a while. Be sure to check out our review of Spiral, which is currently playing on Shudder.
I have been watching a lot of cult-related movies as of late. Some of my favorites that are not Rosemary’s Baby include The Sentinel, Kill List, or The House of the Devil. Please let me know if you have others that are your faves. Many of these are not too gory, aside from House of the Devil. Son is definitely leading the way in the Satanic cult gore category. Many of the scenes are extremely unnerving, one near the end in particular.
Son is definitely worth checking out when it arrives on March 5!
