Man of Steel 2: Where Will The Film Take Superman?

Justice League completed a three-film arc with Superman, played by Henry Cavill. It carried out an ambitious take on Kal-El from Krypton, and, for the most part, the team-up film left Superman’s universe pretty wide open for different stories to tell. Not only are he and Lois Lane set to be engaged but Superman has his childhood home back after it was put up for sale. Clark Kent’s life seems to be relatively back to normal. Yet, how can it? He died in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. That’s perhaps the biggest hoop to go through with the character per where continuity left him. Yes, Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman has come back from the dead. Justice League established that. However, you need a pretty good director to work their way around this situation.

The problem was that Justice League was supposed to be a much different film, especially given the fact it was supposed to have a part two, then it ended up becoming after Zack Snyder, the film’s director, left the project and Joss Whedon took over. It was going to be a tad bit darker until the heroes ultimately overcame the threat of Darkseid in the second part of the two-part movie. For Superman, this affects him completely because he was supposed to come back as evil before turning good again, as the rumors about the film go.

This left us with a happy Superman once more, someone who had found his place in the world and was finally accepted by society. It’s not hard to see that the character now has a chance to finally be himself. If the rumors are true and Matthew Vaughn, the director of X-Men: First Class, the film is in good hands. To look at what this film can do will be interesting. For starters, Superman might want to finally tie the knot and explore more the dynamic between him and Lois Lane. We got that dynamic in Man of Steel and to an extent in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Their relationship was both originally and expertly woven in Man of Steel by David S. Goyer, one of the writers behind The Dark Knight Trilogy.

With Superman married, that means Lois is more important to him than ever. What could be interesting is finally seeing a big villain onscreen outside of the ones we have gotten before. Seeing a villain like Brainiac grace the big-screen would be quite epic. He is one of the biggest villains in the DC Universe and is someone who could go toe-to-toe with Superman physically and mentally. He’s smart and someone who is intimately acquainted often times with Krypton. When you see Brainiac, you can really feel as if the end of the world is going to happen.

Another antagonist for Superman could be Mongol and his War World. Mongol is someone Superman really does not like. One story, “For The Man Who Has Everything,” written by Alan Moore and adopted on the Justice League Unlimited animated series, was about how Mongol used the Black Mercy to put Superman in a coma where he imagines his life on Krypton if the planet had not blown up. It’s tough to read or watch because you feel bad for Superman, knowing he has to eventually come out of it. What it does is create a great deal of anger for Superman toward Mongol. Batman, Robin, and Wonder Woman try to free Superman while battling Mongol, who arrives on the scene after the three heroes had arrived to celebrate Superman’s birthday. It’s a difficult story to watch but a memorable one nonetheless. Otherwise, taking Superman to War World, a planet where aliens from all over are forced to battle to the death, would be cool. You’d have to make it different from Thor: Ragnarok, though.

Maybe, the easiest thing to do might be to go in the direction of where Justice League may have. Darkseid is one of Superman’s antagonists and could be interesting to see the character upfront finally. He was referenced by Steppenwolf in Justice League, and it could work out well to finally reveal his presence in a Superman film. What might be interesting is tying in Darkseid’s coming to earth with Superman’s resurrection. He could seek to battle Superman. Of course, if the rumors are true, that might be Black Adam’s job. Dwayne Johnson, who will play the character, hinted that the two would take one another on in a future film.

Regardless, for such a film, you need to get back to the supporting players of Superman’s world, including Martha Kent and Perry White. Justice League lacked Laurence Fishburne’s Perry White, and it was a shame it did not have him in it. While the film was quite busy and should have been longer, perhaps, because of that, Fishburne’s Perry White was a highlight of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. While Fishburne has joined The Marvel Cinematic Universe recently with his debut in Ant-Man and The Wasp, the hope is he would return, as well as all the other star players (Russell Crowe’s Jor-El?), for the proper sequel to Man of Steel.
