Shout! Factory has released both sequels to Poltergeist on Blu-ray!

Poltergeist II: The Other Side takes places a year after the event of the first film. The Freeling family managed to escape from the house only to see it get sucked up into the unknown. The family now lives in Arizona with Grandma Jess, Diane’s (JoBeth Williams) mother. Steve (Craig T. Nelson) is stuck selling vacuums, son Robbie (Oliver Robins) complains about the lack of TV, and Carol Ann (Heather O’Rourke)  is trying to be normal after being abducted into the supernatural. The start of the film sees the film trying to be their normal happy selves like they were in the beginning of the first film. The scene where Diane and Steve talk about their insurance claim for their house being denied again and her mentioning they are broke, they have lovely tender moment. Of course all of that goes to hell when Grandma Jess dies and Carol Ann utters the famous line “They’re Back.”

Poltergeist II: The Other Side

I’m a fan of the first film and I’ve seen the third film multiple times but I couldn’t remember the plot / events for the second film. As I was watching The Other Side, the plot of the movie started to come back to me but than again, was there really a plot in this mess of a film?

Yup, I went there. I called it a mess. The first film was amazing. It scared the hell out of me. The plot was so intriguing. Like the entire idea of your house being haunted because you pretty much built your property on a graveyard was something I wanted to see. But the second one tried to take all the parts of the first film that made it great and did nothing new with them. The spirits were still after Carol Ann with the reasoning now being since they had a taste of her light, they wanted more. Robbie, her brother didn’t do much in the film except once again get tormented by his toys. You can play the “toys coming to life and scaring you” but it felt weak, recycled.

Also, there were a few explanations in this film in regards to the current events that kinda destroyed the plot of the first film. The main was who exactly was buried in the “cemetery.” The who reveal in the second film made me question the plot in the first film. Truthfully, I’m not taking the reasoning from this film into account and letting it ruin my thoughts of the first film. Poltergeist is too great of a film for it get ruined.

Is it worth a watch? Of course. Is it worth owning? The release from Shout! Factory is! They did such a great job with both the picture quality and audio. I didn’t have to turn up my TV to really hear the characters. The music was leveled nicely as well. Sometimes I’ll have that issue were spoken word is too low so I turn it up but than the music is busting my ear drums. The extras are fun to watch especially those behind the scenes focusing on Giger.

So even though I said Poltergeist II: The Other Side got a bit convoluted, the collector’s edition blu-ray from Shout! Factory is worth owning!

Poltergeist II: The Other Side

“… there are some effective shocks, genuinely scary scenes and a truly creepy villain in Kane.” –

In this thrilling follow-up to the smash hit Poltergeist, the Freeling family (JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, Heather O’Rourke, Oliver Robins) settles into a new home following the annihilation of their former residence by terrifying visitors from the netherworld. But the spirits of the dead are still hell-bent on luring the family’s clairvoyant daughter Carol Anne to “the other side.” This chilling sequel, directed by Brian Gibson (Breaking Glass) also stars Will Sampson (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), Julian Beck (The Cotton Club) and Zelda Rubinstein (Anguish) returns as Tangina.
