Released on Blu-ray and DVD today, INTO THE BANDLANDS is one hell of a mystical martial arts journey!

The story follows Sunny Wu, the Regent (head Clipper) of Baron Quinn and M.K, a teenager with a mysterious power that the Widow wants for herself. The series begins right into the chaos of it all when Wu is sent to find a group of Nomads who destroyed Quinn’s cargo and kidnapped M.K. With the first season only being six episodes total, the very first scene in the pilot starts off with a bang and doesn’t stop.  Part of me was screaming for more at the end of episode six but because INTO THE BADLANDS was so limited, they had no choice but to get right to the point and it worked! The story had to move and boy did it move.

The series has no storage of strong female characters which I absolutely loved. The Widow and her daughter Tilda are such amazing, skilled fighters and seeing them on screen; fighting everybody and anybody is beautiful. All the fighting scenes are beautifully choreographed.

Even the women like Quinn’s wife Lydia, his soon to be wife Jade, and Veil who is in a “secret ” relationship with Wu are strong even though they are not skilled fighters. (At least that we know of!)

And as I mentioned above, all the martial arts / fighting scenes are amazing. They don’t feel over the top and I personally think they are better then some of the Hollywood films out there right now. Also, I noticed that color plays a huge role in the series. If you notice, the colors are brighten to show the power and world of the Barron’s such as the red for the Poppy’s and the Clipper Jackets  at The Fort or the yellow Butterflies for The Widow.

The first season was only six episodes long but I sat down and watch them all in one day without stopping. I haven’t done that in a while. even with short season series. I usually take a break. After that cliffhanger, I can’t wait for the return of INTO THE BADLANDS.

Set in a world centuries from now, “Into the Badlands: The Complete First Season” focused on the spiritual journey of Sunny (Wu) and M.K. (Aramis Knight), a teenage boy who harbors a unique ability, and their growing relationship as teacher and student. Both discover their true purpose and decide to explore what lies beyond the borders of the Badlands, but as their Baron Quinn continues to battle against his own family as well as his rival Baron The Widow, Sunny and M.K.’s journey to a more peaceful existence seems further out of reach.

In addition to Wu and Knight, “Into the Badlands” stars Marton Csokas (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) as Quinn, Oliver Stark (“Luther”) as Ryder; Emily Beecham (28 Weeks Later) as Widow, Orla Brady (“Dr. Who,” “Fringe”) as Lydia, Sarah Bolger (“Once Upon a Time,” “The Tudors”) as Jade, Ally Ioannides (“Parenthood”) as Tilda, and Madeleine Mantock (Edge of Tomorrow) as Veil. “Into the Badlands” Season 2 will return to AMC in 2017.
