The Hateful Eight Blu-Ray Review
Get ready to show some love to The Hateful Eight on blu-ray!
The eight film from the mind of Quentin Tarantino comes to blu-ray with The Hateful Eight! Written and directed by Tarantino, and filmed in Ultra Panavision 70mm, movie was released in December 2015 to much critical and public fanfare, although it did not achieve the box office success of some of the director’s prior works. The Hateful Eight represented a significant change for Quentin in returning to a genre so soon as he often switched genres in between films and rarely made consecutive films with the same exact tone, theme, or setting. Not only that, but the movie was surrounded by a great deal of conflict leading up to its release. Originally intended to be merely a stage play, the story morphed from rough draft stage read, into a potential stage play, which turned into a screenplay for a film, which was then leaked online, which lead to Tarantino wanting to cancel the project, who then changed his mind and decided he wanted to make the film after all. Needless to say, the road to making The Hateful Eight was not always an easy one.
Nonetheless, Tarantino brought his signature flair to the screen once more in crafting a film that was equal parts western and a “whodunnit” mystery. Staples of Tarantino films like Samuel L. Jackson, Walton Goggins, Bruce Dern, Michael Madsen, and Tim Roth surrounded newcomers like Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kurt Russell, Demián Bichir, and Channing Tatum to headlined an eclectic cast of talent. The marketing leading up to the film showcased the exact type of films Tarantino fans have come to love over the years: an ensemble cast of actors both young and old, and of varying levels of experience, putting their acting chops to the test with personalities both cartoonish and real, in really stretching their wings and having fun with the glorification of the characters. Ennio Morricone’s Oscar winning score presented an excellent melodic complement to the film and Tarantino’s technical prowess was as strong as ever in bringing forth an experience like only he can.
In case you missed it in theaters, or want to add it to your collection, here are the details on the Blu-ray release.
