Elizabeth Banks to Play Villain Rita Repulsa in POWER RANGERS Reboot
In what could be considered a surprise casting, Lionsgate has cast veteran actress and director Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Pitch Perfect) to play main villain Rita Repulsa. While there has been minor controversy on social media in regards to the character’s race, the character has had a complex history on both the small and big screen.
The original Power Rangers TV show used a lot of footage from the Japanese show “Super Sentai Zyuranger” (because Fox was cheap.) Hell, all of the big Zord fights with the Monster of the Week, used a combo of stock footage from Super Sentai Zyuranger & shots done for the show. Most footage of villain known on the Power Rangers as Rita Repulsa was portrayed by Japanese actress Machiko Soga and her voice on Power Rangers was dubbed by Barbara Goodson. For the original movie, Rita was portrayed by Julia Cortez, but had her voice dubbed by Goodson, I assume for continuity purposes. Because the character of Rita is supposed to be an Alien & we have not gotten to see Banks in character yet, fans should wait to judge, and then start lodging your complaints.
The film also stars Naomi Scott (The Martian), RJ Cyler (Me Earl & the Dying Girl), Rebecca Gomez aka pop star Becky G, newcomer Dacre Montgomery & Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as the new Power Rangers, directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) & as is set to open March 24, 2017. Hey, it was supposed to come out in January, aka dump month, so maybe Lionsgate has some confidence in this one, but we’ll see. In the mean time, here’s Bank’s tweet announcing her casting, using Rita’s opening lines from the opening credits
