12 Best Movies With Drug-Induced Road Trips

Drugs can play a key role in any film. They can add stake, bond characters together, or be used for comedic effect.

According to Wikipedia, there are 707 American movies that feature drugs. Let’s take a look at twelve memorable films that have a drug-induced road trip.

Drug Movies

1. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

In one of the trippiest movies of all time, a road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas gets out of hand when a man and his attorney consume a lot of drugs. The duo trashes a hotel, which leads to them to head back to LA.

2. Blow

You can figure out which drug is featured in this movie just by looking at the title. The characters in Blow travel all over the country, as a high school football star becomes a prominent cocaine importer.

3. Traffic

This film gives you a glimpse into the drug trafficking world in Mexico. This movie doesn’t have one road trip, but moves all around North American from Mexico to Cincinnati and Washington D.C.

4. Beavis & Butt-Head Do America

Mike Judge’s animated film has the characters of Beavis and Butt-Head travel from Las Vegas to Washington D.C., and they hit many national landmarks along the way. The duo accidently tries Peyote in the dessert.

One of the characters mistakenly sends his girlfriend a videotape of him cheating on her, so he and three of his friends travel from New York to Texas to retrieve the tape. The characters use marijuana and more while on the road trip.

6. Due Date

Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis travel from Atlanta to Los Angeles in time to see the birth of Downey Jr.’s character’s baby. The two acquaintances use marijuana and vicodin throughout the film, which was actually much funnier than I thought it was going to be.

7. Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle

8. Dude, Where’s My Car?

9. The Wolf of Wall Street

The characters in The Wolf of Wall Street travel all over the world, from New York to Switzerland, then to New Zealand. Almost all of the drugs you can think of are seen in this movie. The most memorable scene is when Jordan Belfort takes Quaaludes and is crawling to his car.

10. Flight

Unlike the other movies, the traveling is done through the air, and only at the beginning of the film. A pilot is addicted to drugs and alcohol, and he faces an investigation after one of his flights crash lands. Unlink many of the other ones on this list, this movie focuses on the dark and serious parts of addiction.

11. Leaving Las Vegas

A screenwriter travels from Hollywood to Las Vegas as he fights his addiction to alcohol and cocaine.

12. The Hangover

In one of the most iconic comedies ever, a group of friends travels from California to Las Vegas for a bachelor party. They do drugs and then can’t find the groom.

Drugs in Film

As you can see, drugs are used in movies for different reasons. Sometimes they’re used for comedy, and sometimes they’re used to represent a real struggle people have. Either way, drugs and road trips are featured in some of the most memorable films ever made.
