The Barber is the latest straight-to-DVD thriller to hit shelves. The Barber is, well, about a barber. A barber whose past is is definitely worth hiding from the general public.

Scott Glenn stars in this crime based thriller that centers around Eugene van Wingerdt whose past is more than just a few misdemeanors. He was linked to several murders, but let go due to insufficient evidence. Since then, a lot has changed. The detective who was in charge of the case is no longer around, but his now adult son, John, has returned to town to find out if Euegene is the man he thinks he is. Eugene keeps to himself, drawing not one single bit of judgement from all his fellow friends in town, but sooner than later, John starts asking all these questions and making himself know. To me, this is when the film started to pick up more.

The beginning is a bit on the slow side, I will admit, and there are some scenes that I wish hadn’t made the final cut, but if paying attention, there are definitely certain moments that engross you where you can’t do anything but look at the screen. Especially certain scenes done by Kristen Hager. Her acting brings a sense of realness to the character of Audrey and really stands out in the movie. If you’re wondering if The Barber is for you, don’t forget that, at its core, this is a B-Movie. It’s sense of direction, editing, everything. It all feels that way. It’s not necessarily bad, but it’s not always great. I’d say take a look at the trailer than see if it’s the right movie for you.

Eugene van Wingerdt (Scott Glenn) is a small-town barber hiding a dark secret. Twenty years earlier he was arrested for several gruesome murders, but was released due to insufficient evidence. The detective in charge of the case killed himself in despair. Now the detective’s son is in town, with a few secrets of his own. Is he seeking revenge or hoping to learn at the feet of the master? Through the film’s myriad twists and turns, you’ll realize there’s much more to evil than you ever could imagine. The Blu-ray and DVD will also include Deleted & Extended Scenes and an Alternate Ending.
