As the title suggests, The Expendables 3 is the third film in the Expendables franchise. Sylvester Stallone returns as Barney Ross with his merry band of missionaries, Christmas (Jason Statham), Gunner (Dolph Lundgren), Toll Road (Randy Couture), Caesar (Terry Crews) and Trench (Arnold Schwarzenegger). And, to keep things from getting stale, the film also gets some new blood with Kellan Lutz (The Twilight Saga), Ronda Rousey, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, and Harrison Ford.

The Expendables 3 continues in the spirit of the franchise, but still struggles to land on its feet. Barney and his crew continue to fight the good fight, and even after having their asses handed to them time and time again, still manage to come out on top. Unlike the previous film, the casualties are mostly isolated to tche bad guys which distances the narrative from any sense of realism, but that’s probably not why you picked up this Blu-ray in the first place.

If you’re looking for explosions, trigger happy mad men, and impossible victories, then The Expendables 3 is a fairly decent combination of the three. The film boasts all of the above without veering from the basic ingredients of a generic action movie.

The Expendables franchise brings together an all-star cast of has-been’s and who’s who, especially in this addition to the collection. If the creators are doing anything right, it’s that they sure know how to pack a film with someone for everyone. The huge ensemble cast melds together surprisingly seamlessly.

The Expendables 3 Blu-ray disc doesn’t include a crazy number of special features, but the extras are worth checking out if you’re a fan of the franchise.

  • The Expendables 3 Documentary
  • “New Blood: Stacked and Jacked” Featurette
  • “The Total Action Package” Featurette
  • “Christmas Runs the Gauntlet” Extended Scene
  • Gag Reel

Out of all the extras, the gag reel is probably the most enjoyable. Other than that, there’s not a ton of original ideas floating around. The film, however, looks great in this transfer. The images are vibrant and accompanied with a great score.

If you’re looking for an action-packed film that you don’t have to think about, The Expendables 3 should be on your short list.
