Oscar Watching: Changing Tides?

Best Actress in a Supporting Role

St. Vincent seemingly fell out of major contention weeks ago, but what about Naomi Watts‘ surprise Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nod? It’s probably a one-off, but she might be a possibility if she hits the campaign trail very soon. For now, though, I’m expecting the Oscar lineup to match with the Globes’ list.

1. Patricia Arquette for Boyhood

2. Keira Knightley for The Imitation Game

3. Emma Stone for Birdman

4. Meryl Streep for Into the Woods

5. Jessica Chastain for A Most Violent Year

6. Carmen Ejogo for Selma
7. Rene Russo for Nightcrawler
8. Tilda Swinton for Snowpiercer
9. Laura Dern for Wild
10. Naomi Watts for St. Vincent

Other Possibilities: Kristen Stewart for Still Alice, Carrie Coon for Gone Girl, Mackenzie Foy for Interstellar, Jessica Chastain for Interstellar, Anna Kendrick for Into the Woods, Vanessa Redgrave for Foxcatcher, Julianne Moore for Maps to the Stars, Imelda Staunton for Pride

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Of the four acting races, this one seems the likeliest to deviate ever so slightly from the precursors. The Judge was a critical misfire that failed to ignite audience interest. Is Robert Duvall a weak link, despite his Globe, SAG, and BFCA mentions?

1. J.K. Simmons for Whiplash

2. Edward Norton for Birdman

3. Ethan Hawke for Boyhood

4. Mark Ruffalo for Foxcatcher

5. Tom Wilkinson for Selma

6. Robert Duvall for The Judge
7. Charlie Cox for The Theory of Everything
8. Tyler Perry for Gone Girl
9. Christoph Waltz for Big Eyes
10. Josh Brolin for Inherent Vice

Other Possibilities: Miyavi for Unbroken, Chris Pine for Into the Woods, Johnny Depp for Into the Woods, John Goodman for The Gambler, Michael Caine for Interstellar, David Oyelowo for A Most Violent Year, Martin Short for Inherent Vice, Domnhall Gleeson for Unbroken, Albert Brooks for A Most Violent Year, Alec Baldwin for Still Alice, Logan Lerman for Fury
