Victory Fanfare: The Good, Bad, and Ugly of BATMAN ARKHAM ASYLUM

Batman Arkham Asylum, what’s there to say about it that hasn’t already been said? It’s definitely changed the way we look at licensed games, because we all know the track record of licensed games is, well, to put it lightly, it’s garbage.

When Rocksteady Games got to work on Arkham Asylum, you could feel the excitement everyone was feeling. Here we are with the original voice cast from the animated series, but in a darker, more horrifying world. When it was finally released in 2011 to rave reviews, I knew it finally happened. I’d be playing another Batman game that could trump the original NES Batman game. When I played Arkham Asylum three years ago, I loved it. Now I’m at it again.

Why though? Well, I never played past Arkham Asylum, and now I can, but it’s been too long for me to remember everything that went on in Arkham. So, think of this Victory Fanfare, and the next, as Arkham Fanfare.

The Good: I feel I don’t really have to do much here, it’s an amazing game and everyone knows this. Rocksteady Games did it, they made a good game. The voice acting is excellent, the graphics are amazing, and the gameplay is great. After playing this game I felt like I knew how to be Batman, maybe a bad Batman but Batman nonetheless. You already know all this, so why keep talking about it right?

This game is only three years old, so it’s not like it’s retro so what’s the deal here? Well, I’ve seen so many glowing reviews for this game, and I’ve even included it in lists as one of the best comic book hero games, but I haven’t seen much articles about some of the games flaws. So let’s do that.

The Bad: Flaws you say!? No way, this game is too great. There’s zero flaws, hundred percent good. Yeah, okay, you can think that way. Or we could look at it like adults who play games of the video variety. One issue I have with this game is they made it look so good, so much detail, but the majority of time you’re looking at the game in detective mode, and that sucks. As usual maybe this is just me, but this is why I didn’t like Splinter Cell back in the day. If you’re going to make it look so good, why do I have to spend the majority of my time looking at it in blue?

Okay, so I can look around once I clear the area, sure, but what if I’m not trying to waste my time, I would rather look at it while playing. I can’t though, because without detective mode I’ll miss some guy in a hallway and he’ll get me. Whatever though, the game is still very great and amazing looking, even in blue.

The Ugly: This game really doesn’t have much ugly. The only thing that drove me nuts was after saving some prison guards, then having to save a doctor. I knew what I had to do, but for some reason, Batman never came in and said to me “hey, scan these books dumb-o.” So I didn’t do that and got lost.

What the hell? I walked around for at least 35 minutes trying to figure out what I did wrong, then another 15 minutes passed. I was pissed. I looked up where I was and found I wasn’t the only one who had been trapped here. That is a huge issue, like, how are you supposed to think about that when every other time Batman totally jumps in and says “hey, do this now.” It’s obnoxious.

With all that said though, I still love this game. It’s always fun, a bit frustrating (Poison Ivy), and overall just a fantastic Batman story.

Rocksteady Games also released Batman Arkham City, which is next on the docket for Victory Fanfare. I’ve actually never played this one so it will be fun to play and talk about.

Victory Fanfare” is a game review effort to go through Johnny Ketchum’s game collection and play them all. Once the game is complete Johnny takes all of his random thoughts and breaks it down to the good, the bad, and the ugly.
