Rio 2 is the hilarious follow-up to the 2011 film, Rio. It’s got just as much heart and enough laughs to keep the whole family entertained. The sequel follows Blu, Jewel, and their three kids as they embark on an exciting Amazon adventure to find the last (for real this time) Blue Macaws.

The thing about Rio 2 that really sucked me in was the story. There was action and adventure, but also a big focus on families sticking together. Even as an adult, it was a really fun movie to watch. It also works well as a stand alone film. You don’t need to know the backstory before watching it to be able to enjoy it. The writers insert enough of the cliff notes to make it easy to pick up.

Viewers may notice some familiar voices in the film, both new and returning: Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway,, Jamie Foxx, George Lopez, Tracy Morgan, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, and Jake T. Austin.

Like I said, in this film the entire family travels from Rio, the setting of the first film, to the Amazon. While Tulio and Linda are exploring the rainforest, they come across a feather that they think came from a rare Blue MaCaw. Jewel, already worrying that her family is too domesticated, jumps on the chance to go help them find the mysterious flock.

The story is fairly predictable, but there are enough twists that you feel like you’re getting something out of it. All the song and dance numbers definitely make up for some of the more predictable moments – especially a rendition of “I Will Survive” sung by Nigel, who shows up to spoil Blu’s plans.

The Rio 2 Blu-ray disc comes packed with extras. There is something for viewers of all ages – everything from a sing-along option to hilarious deleted scenes to a featurette about the making of the animated featured. Check out a complete list below:

  • Rio Refresher
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Boom, Shake, Snap: The Local Sounds of Brazil
  • Birds and Beats: The Singing Talents of Rio 2

  • You Be The Judge Auditions
  • “What Is Love” Lyric Video by Janelle Monae

Not only is this disc full of special features, but it looks and sounds great. The vivid colors make the entire story pop on screen, and the audio compliments the aesthetics nicely. You won’t have any trouble hearing or seeing the details. In addition, the Blu-ray edition of Rio 2 comes with a DVD and digital copy for convenient viewing options.

Rio 2 is a great addition to your Blu-ray collection with fun for the whole family!
