Fall 2014 TV Preview: Marvel’s AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on Tuesday, September 22nd in hopes of avoiding the dreaded “sophmore slump” that is often associated with most things pop culture: 2nd albums, sequels to films, and so on. But boy, do they have some huge shoes to fill. Following the events of this summers Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Agent Coulson and his team have little time to regroup from the events of not only their Season 1 finale, but also the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. at the end of The Winter Soldier, and the loss of Director Nick Fury. The stakes for Coulson, Agent May, Skye, and Fitz-Simmons could not be any greater.
What We Know: Agent Coulson was healed from his grave wound at the hands of Loki in Marvel’s The Avengers film by receiving blood from an encapsulated blue alien, now identified as the species of Kree. This is the same blood used to heal Skye as well in Season 1 of Agents, so all bets are off as to how these two characters will develop in Season 2. Agent Ward has been a member of HYDRA for some time, and Agents Fitz and Simmons survived their entombing at the bottom of the sea at Ward’s hands. And poor Agent May is holding whats left of the team together, when all she was supposed to do in the pilot of the show was fly the bus. Oh, and they are all that’s left of S.H.I.E.L.D., an organization the entire world no longer trusts.
What We Don’t Know: How will their near-death experience affect Fitz and Simmons relationship? Who are Skye’s parents, specifically her father? And what’s with Coulson scribbling nonsense all over a wall at Season 1’s end? Can Agent Ward be redeemed, and what about his relationship with Skye? And for god’s sake, did Lola survive the catastrophic fall of S.H.I.E.L.D.?! These and other questions are sure to be addressed, but not before Agent Coulson assumes command of S.H.I.E.L.D., becoming acting Director.
What We Want To See: Season 2 must pickup right where the events of The Winter Soldier and Season 1 left off: with S.H.I.E.L.D. in ruins, HYDRA still operating, and Nick Fury in hiding. Agent Coulson will assume command, and from there the following things need to happen, in no particular order: Finally explain Skye’s backstory – Have Fitz and Simmons get a room already – Agent May must kick even more ass than she did in Season 1 – wrap up the Kree involvement – have at least one Avenger cameo – end the Dethlok storyline – tie into Avengers: Age Of Ultron by season’s end.
