DRAFT DAY Blu-ray Review

Draft Day is out now on Blu-ray and DVD. I had the chance to watch it on Blu-ray last week and have put together an audio review for your listening pleasure.

Directed by Ivan Reitman, the film stars Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner, Denis Leary, Frank Langella, Sam Elliott, Sean Combs, Terry Crews, Ellen Burstyn, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Welling and Pat Healy,

Sports fans and non-sports fans alike will enjoy Draft Day. I am not a huge fan of professional sports/football, but I enjoyed watching this film for the second time after seeing it in theaters. I can equate the intensity to that of Money Ball. Both movies take audiences behind the scenes of the recruitment process in major league baseball and pro football.

I enjoyed the way the Reitman shot the film, using a lot of split screen shots with Costner on the phone with other team managers brokering deals. After listening to the commentary by the writers it was even more impressive to find out that most of the scenes were shot at separate times with stand-ins on the other end of the phone. The audio commentary is one of the best special features on the disc aside from the 58-minute making of documentary.

Costner, Garner and Leary are all fantastic in the leading roles, but the films stands out even more becuse of the stellar supporting cast of character actors. Sean Combs basically played himself, but was perfectly cast as a manager. Timothy Simons (Veep) is awesome as one of the analysts working with Costner. Healy deserves more leading roles in films, but until that happens I am content with him stealing the scenes in films like Draft Day.
