SDCC 2014: Marvel Interested In Joaquin Phoenix, DOCTOR STRANGE

We now have another name linked to play Doctor Strange’s titular character, the next Marvel tentpole. According to The Wrap, Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix is being eyed to play Stephen Strange. While there is no deal in place yet, the site says that the Her star has had discussions for the role and is in consideration.

Other actors linked to Doctor Strange include Jared Leto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Justin Theroux and Tom Hardy. Phoenix has been connected to a number of comic book movie roles in the past, including Bruce Banner in The Avengers and Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, he has become an actor known for his reluctance to attach himself to such a demanding role. Despite this, The Wrap suggests that Strange may not require as hectic a multi-picture contract as other Marvel roles.

Doctor Strange will be directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Jon Spaihts. An announcement for the Phase Three installment is expected to be made at Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel tomorrow. While a release date has yet to be confirmed, it is widely speculated that the July 8th, 2016 slot previously reserved by Marvel is for the Sorcerer Supreme’s big screen debut.

What do you think of Joaquin Phoenix potentially playing Doctor Strange?
