What Would BOOK OF MORMON Look Like in SOUTH PARK?
We’re just going to say this right now: it’s kind of a travesty that everyone has not yet seen South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Broadway musical, The Book of Mormon. Whether you have seen it or not, almost all of us have wondered what the show would look like if it were just made into a special South Park episode. It’s more than likely that Parker and Stone will never make this happen, but one fan did, sort of. Animator Simon Chong animated the entire first song from The Book of Mormon applying the same exact art style that is used in South Park.
According to Chong’s description he “made this version in After Effects CC using Photoshop to set up all the scenes and draw up the Mormons. Assets for actual South Park characters were found wherever [he] could find them on the web. It’s all made at 15 frames a second to help recreate the juddery effect of South Park…” You may also notice that the majority of the backgrounds used are pulled from South Park: The Stick of Truth.
It took about a week to animate the entire segment. “The hard part was figuring out who said what line in the song,” said Chong, “I found a script for the show online which helped enormously.”
For those unacquainted with the Broadway version of The Book of Mormon, it follows the story of “two young Mormon missionaries sent to a remote village in northern Uganda, where a brutal warlord is threatening the local population. Naïve and optimistic, the two missionaries try to share the Book of Mormon […] but have trouble connecting with the locals, who are more worried about war, famine, poverty, and AIDS than about religion.” — Wikipedia
We don’t know about you, but after watching this, we have a strong hankering of listening to the whole Book of Mormon soundtrack for the rest of the day.
