Sonic the Hedgehog is getting a movie treatment thanks to Sony and Sega. Japan-based production company Marza Animation Planet, a division of the Sega Sammy Group, is partnering with Sony and producer Neal Moritz to develop a hybrid computer-animated/live-action feature. For a better idea of what that means for Sonic, think back to the two Smurf movies that were release in the past few years. Marza CEO Masanao Maeda is confident about the collaboration and had this to say:

“Sonic has had dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we’re thrilled that he’s now coming to the big screen. Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we’re confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic while still capturing everything that the fans love about him.”

After being around for over twenty years and selling 140 million games, it’s about time the billion-dollar franchise gets a big-budget movie. The screenplay will be tackled by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux, Upright Citizens Brigade alums. Hopefully they can capture Sonic’s “super cool” attitude. I wonder if they will be influenced by the upcoming game Sonic Boom, the comic books, or any of the video games, but that seems unlikely due to what Hannah Minghella, Columbia Pictures president of production, had to share.

“There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base,” said Minghella. “Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before.”

Seems like there will be a lot of wiggle room to try something new and different with the narrative. With so many characters in the Sonic mythos, I wonder if the movie will have a large ensemble or focus on the key characters. And what will Dr. Eggman (Robotnik) look like? Tough to imagine it all.

What would you want from the Sonic the Hedgehog movie?
