Sunset Overdrive is a game that was shown off at this year’s E3 event, during the Xbox press conference. Many people, myself included, were very excited to see this game due to its use of bright colors making it visually appealing. However, its over the top use of violence made it feel like many games we’ve seen released over the recent years as gaming has pushed the envelope with violence. Despite all that, it still looked like a great game.

Today Insomniac Games released a teaser for Sunset Overdrive mocking Ubisoft. The teaser shows a female character dressed very similar to a character from Ubisoft’s hit series Assassin’s Creed. To the unknowing, let me break this down for you a bit more. During an Ubisoft press conference they teased the next game in the Assassin’s Creed series, Assassin’s Creed Unity. To a majority of people it seemed like nothing, but to the many of us who feel a distinct inequality in the gaming industry, it was a shame to see yet another game without a female protagonist. Of all of the games introduced at E3, only one game had a female protagonist. Ubisoft has said that they toyed with the idea of adding a female assassin, but they scrapped the idea because their model didn’t render correctly.

This sparked outrage in the gaming community for a variety of different reasons. Many felt that Ubisoft’s exclusion of a female character shows the injustice and lack of representation that female gamers face. Others felt that everyone should just be happy about the game and drop the politics. I can go on, and on about what’s wrong with this picture. It’s not actually a political agenda to care about equal rights. Females make up 45 percent of the gaming community. Of course there’s going to be outrage when nearly half of the community does not have the ability to feel represented in games.

In response to Ubisoft, Insomniac Games felt it was fair game to mock the company using a female character dressed as an assassin in the latest episode of the Sunset Overdrive info series–aptly named Sunset TVand, I for one, think it is brilliant.
