Chick Flicks: June 2014 – TFIOS, OBVIOUS CHILD & More

chick flick – (n.) A movie that targets a primarily female audience.
(e.g., most rom-coms, rom-drams, rom-droms and the like)
2. A movie centered around a strong female protagonist.
NOTE: Although commonly misconstrued as such, the term is not, in fact, a pejorative or a synonym for
The Notebook.
What’s In A Name?: Re-Defining “CHICK FLICK”

One year ago, I saw a distressing tweet by famed chick flick writer Kirsten Smith (10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde, with Karen McCullah Lutz) about summer 2013’s movie prospects:

So, I consulted IMDb, Box Office Mojo, Fandango, and the like, emerged with 10 June–July 2013 chick flicks, and—voila!—the Chick Flicks of the Month post was born.

With each successive post, some things changed. I constantly alter the posts’ visual formatting and, perhaps more importantly, have amended my definition of “chick flick” more than once to expand the genre. Hence, below you’ll find flicks that tackle everything from doo-wop and destination weddings, to cancer and abortion—and even one or two that appear out of place (ex. Clark Gregg‘s Trust Me, included for newcomer Saxon Sharbino‘s strong performance).

I’ve also noticed a few things that some distributors, filmmakers, and/or talent do quite well, while others could use some improvement: (1) Movies that aggregate all of their own information, social media links, and videos in one comprehensive website are the (delightful) exception, not the rule. Make it easy for potential audiences to interact with your movie: You have all the correct info, so share it in one, easy-to-find and easy-to-use locale. Audiences will thank you for it. (2) It’s far too easy to miss many movies among today’s myriad offerings, so endeavor to make your movie stand out in any (positive) way possible. Set up a Twitter account, and tweet the movie’s poster and trailer. Do a hashtag search, find press and people discussing similar movies or genres, and tweet them the trailer. Help others help you spread the word—and fans will follow suit.

My heartfelt thanks to the inimitable Kirsten Smith for inspiring this monthly journey into the heart of my favorite genre, and to all of you for reading and sharing this post each month. I sincerely hope that it has been as helpful for you as it has been for me.

And without further ado, here’s the 411 on 8 chick flicks hitting theaters and VOD/digital rental June 627.
