SYNOPSIS: On the brink of separation, Ethan (Duplass) and Sophie (Moss) escape to a beautiful vacation house for a weekend getaway in an attempt to save their marriage. What begins as a romantic and fun retreat soon becomes surreal, when an unexpected discovery forces the two to examine themselves, their relationship, and their future.

There is so much I’d like to say about The One I Love—truly there is—but I’m going to publish very little of it. Charlie McDowell’s feature-film directorial debut, written by first-time feature-film screenwriter Justin Lader, is one of the most inventive films I’ve ever seen—and undeniably one of my TFF 2014 favorites. Its many thought-provoking twists and turns easily and enjoyably lend themselves to conspiracy-theorizing during the film and long after it’s over. I would absolutely hate to spoil even one moment of The One I Love’s cinematic goodness. So I’ll say a little about this unique pseudo-sci-fi romantic dramedy, but do my darnedest to say nowhere near too much.

Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss shine as Ethan and Sophie, a couple who has uncoupled, part-consciously and part-unconsciously. They share both the comfortable ease of spouses, and the awkward tension of two individuals who feel estranged from each other. In all aspects of their respective and joint screen time, Duplass and Moss are simply tremendous. Even set against the couples retreat’s strikingly idyllic scenery—gorgeous from main house and guest house, to pool and grounds—it’s hard to tear your eyes away from Duplass and Moss.

Delightfully original in its premise and execution, The One I Love is a must-see film with an exquisitely creepy Stepford Wives-like vibe that will leave you speechless yet dying to discuss it.

RADiUS-TWC will release The One I Love on August 15, 2014.
