Chick Flicks: March 2014 – VERONICA MARS, DIVERGENT and More!

chick flick – (n.) 1. A movie that targets a primarily female audience.
(i.e., most rom-coms, rom-drams, rom-droms and the like)
2. A movie centered around a strong female protagonist.
NOTE: Although commonly misconstrued as such, the term is not, in fact, a pejorative or a synonym for
The Notebook.
What’s In A Name?: Re-Defining “CHICK FLICK”

In addition to the 2014 Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Cate Blanchett won a special place in my heart when she called BS on the industry’s perception of female-centric projects:

“Those…in the industry who are still foolishly clinging to the idea that
female films with women at the center are niche experiences[:] They are not.
Audiences want to see them and, in fact, they earn money.”

Studios who’ve co-opted the Jerry Maguire rallying cry “Show me the money!” should take heed: An actor’s ability to anchor a film is not determined solely by their gender—nor is a film’s potential profitability determined solely by the protagonist’s gender. Casting a well-suited and talented protagonist and taking care to produce a well-crafted film will go a long way toward achieving the desired profitability.

Blanchett’s speech also inspired me to revise my definition of “chick flick” (above) to explicitly include films that are centered around a strong (and, ideally, (at least somewhat) respectable and/or admirable) female protagonist, even if those films would otherwise fall outside the category’s typical genres. As such, movies like March’s Veronica Mars and Divergent may also be welcomed into the chick-flick fold. (Salutations!)
