GODZILLA Trailer Stomps Online

This is the way the world will end: not with a bang, but with a bwwammmp.

The trailer for the hotly-anticipated Godzilla reboot debuted online today and, aside from the obligatory brass farts that have graced nearly every blockbuster teaser since Inception, there’s a lot to like in its combination of traditional monster movie imagery and cutting-edge CGI spectacle.

A hysterically raving scientist played by Bryan Cranston?  Yep!  Scenes of urban devastation and terrified humans staring up at the sky?  You got it!  Tantalizing glimpses of the newly embiggened Gojira?  Oh hell yes.  One interesting note: the trailer suggests that Godzilla is no longer an anti-nuclear allegory, and hints that the big ol’ lizard was awakened, not created, by nuclear testing.

Warner Brothers has been very smart with its marketing roll-out, gradually hyping the monster’s new look from the special immersive experience at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con to the handful of views we get in this new trailer.  It’s quite a change from the annoyingly aggressive campaign for the much-maligned 1998 American remake – remember “Size Does Matter”? – which somehow managed to drag the Taco Bell chihuahua into the fray.

Godzilla is directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters) and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, and Cranston.  The original kaiju returns on May 16, 2014.
