FEAR PARIS Teaser Trailer: A Creative Glimpse at the Sinister Underbelly of Paris

The Eiffel Tower. Mimes. Love. All clichés of French culture and things we see portrayed openly when a film takes place in Paris. It has been dubbed the city of love and the city of lights, rightfully so.  Think back on everything you know about the famous city, and most of it is deeply rooted in romance. After all, sappy romance films are pretty popular and Paris is one of the most romantic cities in the world.

Something is coming, and it’s going to take all of the clichés we’ve come to know about French culture and turn them on their head. A new film has appeared on the horizon for all of you fantasy-horror fans out there. The producers behind Paranormal Activity, Insidious and The Iceman have joined forces to create Fear Paris – an ambitious new film that explores the dark underbelly of the city of lights.

The films teaser features mayhem, bloodshed and… mimes? That’s right. But these aren’t your typical hand-waving and smiling mimes. The dastardly mimes from the teaser are prepared to kill. During the three and a half minute trailer it becomes painstakingly clear – pun intended – that they are after something, but you don’t find out until the closing scene. I won’t spoil the fun for you, but what plays out is one of the most exhilarating and exciting fantasy-horror sequences I’ve seen of late. The idea is symbolic of what these guys and gals are trying to do, which is to take everything we know about Paris and evolve it into something more sinister.

It will be nice to see a different side of the city. Although, several movies have changed the way we look at the romantic city I still look at is a great place of creative birth – not death. Lots of beautiful art changes hands there, a far cry from the blood exchanged in the Fear Paris teaser.

Fear Paris will be directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Hole), Xavier Gens (Hitman) and Timo Vuorensola (Iron Sky). The entirety of the film will feature a series of interconnected tales, all of which take place in Paris. The material meshes elements of fantasy, horror and science fiction all into one.

Currently, casting is underway and the film will enter production sometime in the Summer or Fall of 2014. We can expect two more directors to join the star-studded lineup soon.

Laura Rister (Untitled Entertainment) and Ehud Bleiberg (Bleiberg Entertainment), together with Steven Schneider (Vicarious Entertainment) join Darryn Welch (Instinctive Film) to produce the film. Tony Noble (Moon) will serve as the production designer. Kristyan Mallet (Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter) is onboard for special effects makeup and prosthetics, which means they should be top-notch!

The imaginative world will be created in collaboration with visual effects from Pixomondo (Hugo) and Prime Focus (Gravity, Judge Dredd).  Richard Raaphorst (Frankenstein’s Army) is the concept designer. Finally, WME Global and Rister will handle North American rights.

If you haven’t had the chance already take a peek at the teaser trailer, you won’t be disappointed! I’m excited to see what stories come out of this creative endeavor.

It looks to be truly unique, which is something the genre has definitely needed for some time. With all of the big names involved it’s sure to be a mind-numbing mix of reality and virtual design. Although, I will say I’m curious if the mimes will be a feature-plot in the film, or if they simply exist to get everyone ready for what’s coming. What do you think?
