Oscar Watching: Guild Overload

Best Actress in a Supporting Role

Breakthrough Lupita Nyong’o and film superstar – and last year’s best actress winner – Jennifer Lawrence are the only two actresses to score nominations at each major precursor. Those who want Oprah Winfrey in will be happy to know that she rallied with a BAFTA nomination. June Squibb missed with that group, however, so support for her isn’t quite as strong as we expected, but I still think she makes the grade with Oscar at the expense of either Sally Hawkins or Julia Roberts. Oh, and Nyong’o gets the Globe… I hope.

1. Lupita Nyong’o for 12 Years a Slave

2. Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle

3. June Squibb for Nebraska

4. Oprah Winfrey for Lee Daniels’ The Butler

5. Sally Hawkins for Blue Jasmine

6. Julia Roberts for August: Osage County
7. Octavia Spencer for Fruitvale Station
8. Scarlett Johansson for Her
9. Margo Martindale for August: Osage County
10. Margot Robbie for The Wolf of Wall Street

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

In what can only be considered another awards-season surprise, Jared Leto missed the BAFTA lineup, but he should still win the Globe. But Michael Fassbender isn’t campaigning. Maybe Bradley Cooper can capitalize on love for Hustle since, if my predictions are correct, he’ll be the only previous nominee. Maybe my early, crazy prediction of a Barkhad Abdi win wasn’t so crazy?

1. Michael Fassbender for 12 Years a Slave

2. Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club

3. Barkhad Abdi for Captain Phillips

4. Bradley Cooper for American Hustle

5. James Gandolfini for Enough Said

6. Daniel Brühl for Rush
7. Jonah Hill for The Wolf of Wall Street
8. Will Forte for Nebraska
9. Jeremy Renner for American Hustle
10. Tom Hanks for Saving Mr. Banks

How did the WGA nods shuffle the cards?
