MACHETE KILLS Blu-ray Review

Have you ever been to a movie and the trailers were the best part? Machete Kills is a prime example a movie whose trailer is much better than the actual film. The thoroughly disappointing sequel directed by Robert Rodriguez, arrived on Blu-ray and DVD this month. Danny Trejo reprises his role as the badass Mexian Federale, Machete. This time the President (Charlie Sheen) has sent him on a mission to take down an arms dealer (Mel Gibson) who plans to launch a weapon into space.

Just like the first film, there are a ton of supporting cast members. Machete Kills also features, Michelle Rodriguez, Cuba Gooding Jr, Lady Gaga, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, William Sadler, Demian Bichir, Antonio Banderas and Alexa Vega. While that cast may sound impressive, I felt it was too large for it’s own good – Sheen, Gaga and Gooding Jr I am talking to you. Gibson was decent as the super villain, which made up for some of the other cast additions. Vergara’s voice was cute in the past, but for some reason her accent seems to be getting worse. The gag of guns in her breast were laughable.

When I saw the fake trailer before Rodriguez’s Grindhouse I was blown away because I love gory action. Machete Kills may have that, but nothing else. As I stated above, the trailer looked better then the actual film. Before Machete Kills there was a trailer for the upcoming third film called Machete Kills Again…In Space! I felt like I was watching Moonraker (one of my favorite Roger Moore James Bond movies). Not only was I sold on the third film, I was now in the mood for a fun time with Machete Kills. The action was a nice mixture of grizzly violence and humor. The screenplay was what did the film in. During non-action moments I was extremely bored. The plot was all over the place and very dull and not as funny as I hoped.

Machete Kills features a 1080p digital transfer which makes the colors and action scenes come to life. The disc features a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track that makes the bullets seem as though they are whizzing by. If you are hoping for a bunch of special features, don’t hold your breath. The disc only features two 20-minute sequences. The “Making Of” featurette takes fans behind the scenes with the cast and crew and is nothing spectacular. In addition, the deleted scenes feature shows cut scenes that are not much different to the scene used in the movie.

There is no denying that Danny Trejo has a commanding on-screen presence and that he is perfect as Machete, but I would much rather see him in an ensemble cast like he was in Heat. One thing is for sure, he is one of the hardest working actors, with over 22 movies coming out in 2014 alone. I would recommend you watch Grindhouse and Machete instead of this film. You can buy Machete Kills here if you are so inclined.
