Oscar Watching: “It’s So Fluffy”… and Awful?

Best Actor in a Leading Role

LAFCA winner Bruce Dern, New York Film Critics Online (NYFCO) winner Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Matthew McConaughey lead the category. Tom Hanks and Robert Redford are vulnerable, though the latter’s NYFCC win gives him a boost. The divisively received Out of the Furnace didn’t heat up the weekend box office, so take Christian Bale out of the mix for that one. He can still get in for Hustle, however.

1. Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club

2. Bruce Dern for Nebraska

3. Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave

4. Robert Redford for All is Lost

5. Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips

6. Forest Whitaker for Lee Daniels’ The Butler
7. Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street
8. Michael B. Jordan for Fruitvale Station
9. Christian Bale for American Hustle
10. Oscar Isaac for Inside Llewyn Davis

SAG Predictions

I imagine SAG will want to see Dern walk away with this one, but you never know.

1. Bruce Dern for Nebraska

2. Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club

3. Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave

4. Robert Redford for All is Lost

5. Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips

6. Forest Whitaker for Lee Daniels’ The Butler
7. Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street
8. Michael B. Jordan for Fruitvale Station
9. Christian Bale for American Hustle
10. Oscar Isaac for Inside Llewyn Davis

Golden Globe Predictions – Drama

Hanks, McConaughey, and Redford are A-list stars giving acclaimed performances, while Ejiofor leads one of the major front-runners. Again, the HFPA didn’t like Lee Daniels’ The Butler, but will voters ignore him in favor of someone like Hugh Jackman?

1. Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club

2. Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave

3. Robert Redford for All is Lost

4. Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips

5. Forest Whitaker for Lee Daniels’ The Butler

6. Hugh Jackman for Prisoners
7. Idris Elba for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
8. Christian Bale for Out of the Furnace
9. Chris Hemsworth for Rush
10. Casey Affleck for Ain’t Them Bodies Saints

Golden Globe Predictions – Musical or Comedy

Recent category reveals about Hustle and Wolf shook up this race. Expect Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio to get in for those flicks, but Dern might emerge as the likely unlikely victor. James Gandolfini might get some posthumous love, while Joaquin Phoenix might score another nod for Her. Tough category this year.

1. Bruce Dern for Nebraska

2. Christian Bale for American Hustle

3. Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street

4. James Gandolfini for Enough Said

5. Joaquin Phoenix for Her

6. Oscar Isaac for Inside Llewyn Davis
7. Ben Stiller for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
8. Ethan Hawke for Before Midnight
9. James Corden for One Chance
10. Miles Teller for The Spectacular Now

Will the supporting actress race come down to superstars or breakthroughs?
