Oscar Watching: “It’s So Fluffy”… and Awful?

Best Actress in a Leading Role

The LAFCA and other critics groups have rallied around Cate Blanchett for her Blue Jasmine performance. She’s the current front-runner, but the televised awards might shake up the race. On that note, Bullock needs to win the Golden Globe and/or SAG to remain a threat for the win. Anyone except for Adèle Exarchopoulos – a risky prediction, I’ll admit, despite tying Blanchett with the Los Angeles film critics – can win this, honestly.

1. Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine

2. Amy Adams for American Hustle

3. Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks

4. Sandra Bullock for Gravity

5. Adèle Exarchopoulos for Blue is the Warmest Color

6. Judi Dench for Philomena
7. Meryl Streep for August: Osage County
8. Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Enough Said
9. Brie Larson for Short Term 12
10. Julie Delpy for Before Midnight

SAG Predictions

Blanchett and Bullock should have no trouble landing nods; just behind them, I think, are Amy Adams and Emma Thompson, either of whom might win this race. Exarchopoulos occupies the hypothetical “last spot,” which might go to Dench or Streep, and probably misses an Oscar nod if she doesn’t show up here

1. Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine

2. Sandra Bullock for Gravity

3. Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks

4. Amy Adams for American Hustle

5. Adèle Exarchopoulos for Blue is the Warmest Color

7. Meryl Streep for August: Osage County

9. Brie Larson for Short Term 12
10. Julie Delpy for Before Midnight

Golden Globe Predictions – Drama

This can go any which way, but I’m confident in my top five, with Blanchett poised for the win. However, Dench and Thompson won their last Golden Globes more than 10 years ago, and Gravity was a massive hit thanks to Bullock. Maybe the veterans cancel each other out and pave the way for the breakthrough to win?

1. Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine

2. Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks

3. Sandra Bullock for Gravity

4. Judi Dench for Philomena

5. Adèle Exarchopoulos for Blue is the Warmest Color

6. Kate Winslet for Labor Day
7. Brie Larson for Short Term 12
8. Sophie Nélisse for The Book Thief
9. Bérénice Bejo for The Past
10. Jennifer Lawrence for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Golden Globe Predictions – Musical or Comedy

It’s Adams vs. Streep, I think. Let’s see how Hustle and August do at the box office before declaring a winner, though. Julia Louis-Dreyfus would be a fun, against-type winner. The HFPA loves Scarlett Johansson and likely nominates her for Don Jon since her voice-only work in Her was deemed ineligible. This group also adores Bullock, who could pull off double nods like she did in 2009.

1. Amy Adams for American Hustle

2. Meryl Streep for August: Osage County

3. Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Enough Said

4. Scarlett Johansson for Don Jon

5. Sandra Bullock for The Heat

6. Julie Delpy for Before Midnight
7. Melissa McCarthy for The Heat
8. Greta Gerwig for Frances Ha
9. Melissa McCarthy for Identity Thief
10. Shailene Woodley for The Spectacular Now
