Oscar Watching: Consensus Evades 2013

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Michael Fassbender won’t campaign, and Leto’s film might lack crucial support despite his NYFCC victory. Ignoring my Barkhad Abdi hunch, no other actor looks to win. A fantastic year for Tom Hanks might net him double nods, including one for Saving Mr. Banks. James Gandolfini’s turn in Enough Said could fill out that last spot, but might The Weinstein Co. push David Oyelowo and/or Steve Coogan for nominations? Forte gains ground with his NBR win – for a film that should do well with the motion-picture academy, no less.

1. Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club

2. Michael Fassbender for 12 Years a Slave

3. Tom Hanks for Saving Mr. Banks

4. Barkhad Abdi for Captain Phillips

5. James Gandolfini for Enough Said

6. Will Forte for Nebraska
7. Jonah Hill for The Wolf of Wall Street
8. Jeremy Renner for American Hustle
9. Bradley Cooper for American Hustle
10. David Oyelowo for Lee Daniels’ The Butler

Also in the running: Jake Gyllenhaal for Prisoners, Matthew McConaughey for Mud, Steve Coogan for Philomena, Harrison Ford for 42, John Goodman for Inside Llewyn Davis, Josh Brolin for Labor Day, Daniel Brühl for Rush, Geoffrey Rush for The Book Thief, Chris Cooper for August: Osage County, Woody Harrelson for Out of the Furnace, Andrew Dice Clay for Blue Jasmine, Alec Baldwin for Blue Jasmine
