Oscar Watching: Consensus Evades 2013

Edit: This article once stated that Judi Dench was a musical or comedy contender at the Golden Globes for her work in Philomena. However, she and the film will compete in the drama categories.

This week saw not only the Gotham Awards ceremony, but also the New York Film Critics Circle and National Board of Review naming its year-end awards. Perceived front-runner 12 Years a Slave won at none of these three ceremonies. Inside Llewyn Davis took Gotham; American Hustle won with New York, though 12 Years almost won; and Her pulled off a surprising win with the NBR. We still expect 12 Years to sweep the Indie Spirits, right?

More on each individual ceremony later, but consensus evades the 2013 awards season already. Sure, it makes this mess more difficult to predict, but why not keep it interesting? “This Movie Wins Again” is a boring headline, isn’t it?

Check out more about the week’s major awards on the next page, and feel free to comment.
