HERCULES: THE LEGEND BEGINS Trailer Starring Kellan Lutz

Greek hero Hercules has an illustrious cinematic history. From the 1958 Pietro Francisci-directed classic to Disney’s animated 1997 hit, Hercules has been portrayed in a variety of ways. As a powerful demigod and Zeus’ son, Hercules has a story well worth retelling and exploring. However, since the ‘90s–when Disney’s Hercules released and cult TV show Hercules: The Legendary Journeys was airing–there hasn’t been much in terms of new Hercules films, until now.

2014 will see the release of two big-budget films centered on Hercules, one starring Kellan Lutz and the other starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Hercules. Lutz’s film is the first of the two to be released and is entitled Hercules: The Legend Begins. Directed by Renny Harlin and slated to premiere on January 10th, Hercules: The Legend Begins follows the beginnings of the mythical Greek hero. Hercules is betrayed by his king and is forced into slavery, where he embarks on a journey of strength and courage to return to his true love, Hebe the Princess of Crete, played by Gaia Weiss.

The recently released trailer for Hercules: The Legend Begins packs the same excitement and mythical glory as the wildly successful 300, whose trailer elicited similar awe upon its release. Hercules: The Legend Begins looks very similar. Within several seconds, the trailer launches viewers into an intense Greek battle, swords clinging against each other in a sprawling battlefield. What follows is a quick glimpse at the love story between Hercules and Hebe. This, and Hercules’ defiance to the king, helps explain why Hercules is exiled and sold into slavery. This is simply where his adventure begins, though. Overcoming hardships is the first step in becoming a legend, and Hercules seems to overcome plenty of them throughout Hercules: The Legend Begins.

Following Hercules’ exile, the trailer begins to show a story of triumph and commitment. A coliseum fight reminiscent of Ridley Scott’s 2000 cult favorite Gladiator prepares audiences for the heart-thumping action about to ensue. Hercules’ words, and those of his allies, intertwine with sounds of battle and dramatic strings. “I will not stop until I return the princess and avenge my loyal friend,” Hercules says convincingly. A fierce ally encourages him: “Embrace your father and you will discover powers you’ve never imagined.” Judging by the trailer, viewers can expect plenty of these powers to be shown throughout. Superhuman strength is bound to displayed, as the hero smashes through walls and bends metal, though it begs the question: Will the king and his minions find Hercules’ Achilles’ heel?

Lutz, who is best known for playing Emmett Cullen in The Twilight film series, looks to be a great fit for Hercules. A great lead in a Hercules film is as essential. Judging by the trailer, Lutz seems very convincing in the role. Check it out for yourself when Hercules: The Legend Begins is released on January 10thScott Adkins (The Expendables 2), Liam Garrigan (Strike Back), Liam McIntyre (Spartacus), and Roxanne McKee (Game of Thrones) round out the supporting cast. With an apt lead, plenty of battle scenes and a committed love story, the trailer for Hercules: The Legend Begins suggests that the film will be a memorable one.
