X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Trailer Shows Off Its Massive Cast
It doesn’t matter how you feel about previous films in the series, the trailer of X-Men: Days of Future Past is still exciting. It is so because of the sheer potential that is looming about. This film could offer just the nudge the series so desperately needs, or it could sink. As an X-man freak, if this one ends up in the gutter, I might end up in alcohol rehab from being so depressed. That being said, Days of Future Past is coming from Bryan Singer the same man responsible for the original films in the series: X-Men and X2, so perhaps there’s hope.
The trailer opens rather ominously with an eyeball and a single question posed in the background. “What’s the last thing you remember?” The point of view snaps back and we clearly see Wolverine, the apparent source of said eye. One peculiar thing to note is that the hair around his temples has greyed. This is the first indication that we will visit the future, or possibly what can be called the present.
From there, the trailer spirals off and takes us through a series of cameos including every X-Men character from the series so far (you’ve got this list memorized, right?) along with some new ones. We see Wolverine, Magneto, Professor X, Storm, Mystique, Blink, Beast, and even Richard Nixon. Unfortunately, Cyclops is still dead as a doornail.
About halfway through we see Professor X and Magneto standing “side by side to end this war.” Not once are we able to glean what war they are talking about exactly. We’re only left to ponder who the real enemy is. Especially since Peter Dinklage as Bolivar Trask is probably not the big bad guy this time around, even if he is rocking that super awesome moustache. It doesn’t help that there’s a scene showing off young Magneto and Mystique fighting against one another.
Perhaps the most interesting thing to note is the end scene, which has old Professor X talking to a younger version of himself. Bald X is pleading with young X, “We need you to hope again.” It seems fitting considering how many times the series has plundered over the years. Dare we X-fans hope for greatness?
One thing is certain about this trailer, during the story there will be a whole lot of time jumps between past, present and future. It’s apparent that there will even be the occasional time mesh here and there, past meets future. It all works to bolster the idea that Singer is going to single-handedly connect all the other films in the series. It will be interesting to see if X-Men Origins: Wolverine is factored into that equation, or if it’s dismissed completely.
Personally, I have to admit that I felt nothing but dread towards this film until I watched the trailer. It certainly seems like Singer can redeem the series with Days of Future Past, but only time will tell. Will this jumbled smorgasbord of X-Men scenes from past, present and future go down as some of the best in the series, or worst? If the trailer is any indication, we’re in for wild ride.
