CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 Movie Review
I must admit that I was a bit worried when I went in to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. I really liked the first one, but the trailers had me a bit concerned. Over the summer, I watched Despicable Me 2, and while I enjoyed it, I didn’t like the scenes that were dedicated solely to the Minions. When I saw how many food puns were in the trailer for Cloudy 2, I was concerned that the movie would simply be wall-to-wall food puns and name related jokes. Well while the movie did have it’s fair share of these, it was also filled with great jokes, cute moments, and enjoyable scenes that make for a great kids movie that adults can enjoy, one that I may have enjoyed more than the first movie.
In the beginning of the film, we learn about Flint’s (Bill Hader) childhood hero Chester V, a world famous inventor who runs the Live Corp Company. Shortly after the first movie leaves off, the inhabitants of Swallow Falls are evacuated so that the food can be cleaned up. After Flint losses out on a big promotion at work, Chester V assigns Flint to go back to Swallow Falls to get his machine back. Of course he tells his gang from the first movie, and they take off back home to get to the machine.
The group journeys through the island, coming across various animal food creations, including cheeseburger spider monsters, watermelophants, and an adorable strawberry named “Berry”. Flint is focused on finding his machine and impressing Chester V, but the rest of the gang seems to think that something is up. Eventually they realize that the food animals are really just like any other animals, with families, homes, and territorial actions.
Eventually, Flint abandons the group to pursue his ultimate goal with Chester V and his assistant ape, while the rest of the crew gets left behind. There’s not a ton that I can say about the plot of the movie, other than the fact that it is full of small jokes and visual puns that simply put a smile on your face. Thankfully, there is more to the comedy then simple food puns, though there is a good amount of it. As with the first one, all of the side characters, from Manny (Benjamin Bratt) to Cop Earl (Terry Crews) have their own specific story and humor that ties the cast all in together.
What I loved about this movie is that every scene was enjoyable for a different reason. Some of them were full of hilarious one liners from the entire core of the main cast. There was more camera time for Flint’s dad Tim (James Caan), including some funny scenes of him fishing with pickles. And then there are some scenes that are just so cute you can’t help but giggle, like when the family of marshmellows gets a new baby (just imagine how cute little marshmellows with faces are).
It’s pretty simple. If you liked the first movie, you will love the second one. If you were indifferent on the first, you will like the second one for the sheer amount of cute food animals. Simply put: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 is a fun movie that will leave you with a smile on your face. A perfect kids movie and a great movie for the kid in all us adults.
