Grand Theft Auto V – $800 million in a day proves violence is king!

Based on the online buzz about Grand Theft Auto V, it was on track to make a ton of cash. Take-Two Interactive Software announced that GTA V raked in $800 million in one day, which is the highest first day retail sales of any title in the history of the company and the Grand Theft Auto franchise.

The $800 million worldwide does not even include the upcoming launches  in Japan and Brazil, according to company estimates. In 2012, Call of Duty: Black Ops II held the record up to this point with $500 million on the first day. In 15 days the game brought in $1 billion dollars.

Here is what Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two had to say in a statement:

“All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to ‘Grand Theft Auto V.’ Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry’s new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence. Beginning at midnight on Monday, consumers around the world gathered in anticipation to be among the first to experience the evolution of this remarkable series. In North America alone, more than 8,300 stores opened their doors at midnight to welcome fans whose loyalty and enthusiasm were rewarded with what The New York Times called ‘the most immersive spectacle in interactive entertainment.’ We are incredibly proud of Rockstar Games’ creative achievement and could not be more pleased with the success of this launch.”

I didn’t purchase Grand Theft Auto V and have not played the Grand Theft Auto series since it was on the PS One. I prefer first-person shooters like the Call of Duty franchise. The GTA series mixes comedy with dark violence all with a engaging story line. Gamers in the 18-34 demographic eat the game up. It is so popular because it is even fun to watch if you aren’t playing. Large groups of players gathered around their consoles to engage in extreme violence.

I am a big supporter of the game industry’s battle against people who claim video games are the cause of violence. People kill people, not games. Violent games like Grand Theft Auto V are a form of escapism, and allow people to do things that they could never do and would never do in real-life.  Share your thoughts on the game in the comments below.
