THE EAST Blu-ray Review
Smart, thrilling, and packed with a message – The East deserves to be seen. While it has recognizable names, this flew largely under the radar in theaters garnering only $4 million in ticket sales. If you missed this one in theaters, which most of us did, I definitely recommend picking up The East Blu-ray or DVD.
Inspired by their time roaming the country and following different subcultures like co-op living, freeganism, and more, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij have crafted a taught thriller focusing on counter culture vs. big business and the consumerist way of American life. While focusing on the extremes, it does provide insight in to the wasteful capitalist ways that have these counter-culture groups so upset. While it’s clear that the creators have a certain point-of-view when writing/making this movie, you don’t have to agree with them to enjoy the finished product. The suspense of Brit Marling’s Sarah being embedded within this organization, if she’ll be found out, if she’ll actually turn them in in the end, and more keeps this chugging a long nicely.
The East Synopsis:
From producer Ridley Scott and directed by Zal Batmanglij comes a taut, sexy thriller starring Brit Marling (Arbitrage), Alexander Skarsgard (TV’s “True Blood”) and Oscar® Nominee Ellen Page. Sarah Moss (Marling) is an ambitious new recruit at an elite private intelligence firm. Her first undercover assignment is to infiltrate “The East,” an elusive activist collective that terrorizes corporate leaders who commit crimes against humanity. The more involved she gets, the more Sarah’s life is in danger in this “great conspiracy thriller” (Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News).
