D23 Expo ’13: Marvel and Disney Nature Presentation
The first part of our D23 Expo ’13 was the Live Action presentation: Let The Adventures Begin! On Friday, Disney unveiled some exclusive content from their upcoming animated projects, and today, we saw what they have in store for us from the Marvel and Nature branches of their group. And boy was there some exciting stuff!
The presentation started with a sizzle reel of what we were in store for, showing snippets of everything from Thor: The Dark World, to Saving Mr. Banks, and everything in between! They talked breifly about Star Wars Episode VII, which won’t be coming out until 2015. They didn’t have anything in the way of footage, but they did remind the crowd that JJ Abrams will be directing, John Williams will do the score, and Michael Arndt, who wrote Toy Story 3 and will be writing this installment of the Star Wars franchise.
From there, we jumped right into the Marvel panel, with President of the company Kevin Feige leading the way. The first movie they talked about was Thor: The Dark World. I was very excited to see the footage of this and the other Marvel films as I had missed out on them at Comic Con. And yeah….they didn’t disappoint.
Thor: The Dark World has a much grander scale it seems than the first one. While the first film was mainly set in Santa Fe, the sequel looks like it will jump between Asgard and London, with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), coming to Asgard for the first time. The action appears grander and darker, which seems appropriate given the title of the film.
Speaking of Portman, she was on hand to talk about the film! She was joined by Anthony Hopkins and Tom Hiddleston, who sadly for us wasn’t in costume, and didn’t sing. We got robbed! But in all seriousness, the film looks great and I can’t wait to see what Marvel has in store for us for the next line of Avengers films.
Speaking of Avengers films, the next movie they teased was Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Much like Thor, this movie seems to be taking on a darker nature, more serious then the light hearted nature of the first one. And again, it looks awesome. I finally saw the “one armed beatdown” iin the elevator that I heard from all my friends, and we also got to see some world premiere footage of Captain and his team invading a ship. My god. That is about all I can say. Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan were on hand, and answered a few questions before taking off. For anyone at Disneyland today, be on the lookout for Evans he said he was going after this panel!
The last film from Marvel was Guardians of the Galaxy, a new project for the movie studios. They have only been shooting for about a month, so again they didn’t have much to show, but we did see a few things. I love the cast of the film, which includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and John C Reilly! They are currently shooting in London, so no one was on hand to talk about it, but it still looks like a fantastic project that I’m eager to learn more about.
After Marvel left the stage, we got a brief look into the next project for Disney Nature. So far, they have taken us through the oceans, and let us live along side African Cats and Chimpanzees. In April, we will be walking in the shoes, or paws, of one of nature’s most majestic and powerful creatures: Bears. The film will center around two parent bears who are trying to raise their two cubs in the wilderness of Alaska. We were treated to a clip of about two minutes of the bears in action, and I think I died from the cute at least three times. Disney always has a way of making us have human like emotions for animals that have limited expression, and I don’t see why Bears, with a paw print in the A on the poster, will be any differenent. That film will be in theaters on April 18th of 2014.
