HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER “The Bro Mitzvah” Episode Recap
An amazing thing happened as I watched this week’s How I Met Your Mother. I fell in love with the show all over again. How I Met Your Mother and myself have had a checkered past. There are times where I’ve sung the praises of the show to no end, and there have been other times where I literally wanted to punch the TV in frustration. But this week’s episode, The Bro Mitzvah, was not only my favorite episode of this season, but one of my favorite episodes in the shows existence.
While most episodes revolve around two main story lines, this episode just had one: Barney’s (Neil Patrick Harris) bachelor party. Marshall (Jason Segal) and Ted (Josh Radnor) take Barney to Atlantic City, only their hotel room is just on the outside of the city in a shady motel. The entertainment, while usually strippers and booze, is in fact a clown that contorts balloons. And there’s an amazing cameo, as The Karate Kid (Ralph Macchio) is featured throughout the episode, and is strikingly similar to Barney. In….wait for it…..credible!
The night gets even worse when a stripper does finally show up, except that it’s Barney’s ex-fiancee Quinn. When she finds out who the bachelor is, she says that she will strip for everyone, except the bachelor, and she will make it “extra dirty.” While this is all happening, Robin (Cobie Smulders), is having dinner with Barney’s mother, who thinks that she is a virgin. Eventually, Barney packs it up for the night, and says they have to go back. However, he is gouded into gambling on the drive back, and turns around to play his favorite game and ours, Pinyin: xíng háishì bùxíng (Chinese for Deal or no Deal). This is of course the game that we first learned about in the previous episode “Atlantic City.” Unfortunatley, it doesn’t quite go Barney’s way this time, as he loses $80,000.
When he returns to New York and sees Robin, Quinn pops up, and Robin says that this is unforgivable, and calls the wedding off. After she storms off, she calls Ted, and says “right on schedule.” Yes, in fact, the entire night was planned, so that Barney, who has an epic night every night, would have the worst night of his life at his bachelor party. While he acts like he’s upset at first, he then says he loves it, and that they nailed it, except for the fact that they didn’t have the “real karate kid.” He is referring to the villan in the movie, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), who we know Barney idolizes. However, the clown, who has been mute the entire time, finally speaks up, and reveals that it is in fact Lawrence, thus completing the epic night for Barney.
This episode had it all. Macchio was hilarious throughout the episode, and there were countless references to older episodes for the How I Met Your Mother fans who have been there for years. I loved every second of this episode, and while I’m sure I will be cursing this show again sometime soon (maybe even before the end of the season), I’m once again completely hooked. Well played, fellas. Well played.
