THE CONJURING Trailer Horrifies into an R Rating

Little girls in dirty nightgowns, and whispering demons, and invisible forces, and screaming- oh the screaming.  The new trailer for The Conjuring holds all the same horror tropes as of late. Small silences punctuated by sudden shrieks and pleasant, familiar domiciles perverted into evil hiding places.  We’ve seen most of this before.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the trailer is the attention to the protagonists, Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga).  Absent in the previous teaser, the ghost-hunter/investigator take on the whole endeavor may give the genre some much needed oomph.  And although the trailer boasts its “based-on-actual-events” badge like so many others, our curiosity is piqued, if only by the historical setting and ideally objectivity of the source material.  Director James Wan has made a career in the genre, and with the MPAA giving The Conjuring a rating of R, just for it being “too scary” for a PG-13, we’ll keep our cautiously optimistic eyes open for this lurker.

Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville. Based on a true story, “The Conjuring” tells the horrifying tale of how world renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.
