As for the rest of us, we all kind of saw this coming. Okay, maybe not kind of. Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch is playing the legendary Khan Noonien Singh, not the John Harrison character we were previously led to “believe.” Cumberbatch does actually play a John Harrison in the film, but really it’s just like the Miranda Tate pseudonym in The Dark Knight Returns.

The news first broke with Furious Fanboys:

Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness. All that bullshit of him not being Khan and really “John Harrison” was just a cover to hide the truth from moviegoers. Oh, he does go by “John Harrison” in the movie…but that’s not his real name. He reveals his name to Kirk later in the movie.

There you go, guys. Are you surprised by this revelation? Frankly, I’m sort of glad Cumberbatch is actually playing Khan instead of a mere clone of the character. Just by watching the trailers it looks as though J.J. Abrams will be merging the Khan mythos from the original TV series and Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, but with his own alternate universe spin. I kind of wish they went with a completely original idea, but this is Khan we’re talking about. Any Trek fan would be remiss to pass him up, especially when you have Benedict Cumberbatch this time around.
