BATMAN: ARKHAM ORIGINS Announced
Holy Batman, Batman! The next entry in the rather excellent BATMAN: ARKHAM series has been announced. BATMAN: ARKHAM ORIGINS is set years before the events of ARKHAM ASYLUM and ARKHAM CITY, sort of like ARKHAM: YEAR ONE. The game is set for an October 25, 2013 release date for PC, WiiU, XBOX 360, and PS3. GameInformer will have this as their May 2013 magazine cover:
The fact they’re making another ARKHAM game is not very surprising. They registered the domain website batmanarkhamorigins.com back in January. The genuine (and slightly unsettling) surprise is that Rocksteady Studios, developer of the first 2 games, will not be returning to develop ORIGINS. That Bat-torch has been passed to Warner Bros. Games Montreal, a sub-studio of Warner Bros Interactive. Montreal is responsible for the polished WiiU port of ARKHAM CITY: ARMORED EDITION, so they’re no strangers to the cape and cowl. Note, Rocksteady has officially endorsed Montreal as the developer for the Caped Crusader, and given them access to original art elements so the aesthetic (dark and brooding Unreal-style) stays consistent. That’s a relief. Rocksteady has a very good track record with the Bat, so it’s relieving to see they care about their work.
This sudden change of a separate developer to an internal studio could mean a couple things:
- Rocksteady is developing a new IP and doesn’t want to do another Batman game.
- Rocksteady is developing another unannounced franchise game for WB.
- Rocksteady is under financial pressure and can’t develop the game. Due to the ridiculous success of ARKHAM CITY, I doubt this is the case.
WB is also releasing a PS Vita game entitled BATMAN: ARKHAM ORIGINS BLACKGATE for the same release date, but it’s unclear right now how these two games are connected. It looks like a side-scrolling, Metroidvania style game in the same vein as SYMPHONY OF THE NIGHT. Interesting thought: PS VITA and PS4 are planning to have a lot of interconnectivity, GBA Advance-Gamecube style. WB missed the boat on not pushing ARKHAM ORIGINS to PS4, but that has yet to be seen.
Here’s some official screenshots from both ARKHAM ORIGINS and BLACKGATE. It’s basically kinda boring beefy dudes scowling at each other, but hey, it’s Batman.
