Soundtrack Your Valentine’s Day: The Good, the Bad, or the Ugly

Valentine’s Day – love it or hate it, you always acknowledge it.  Those in love go to dinner, maybe a movie and dancing, spend all night kissing or holding hands, before going home for some sexual healing.  The single guys and gals may go out with friends, burn some old photographs, watch The Notebook and cry alone, or, if you’re like me, put on Alanis Morisette and eat an entire Russell Stover’s chocolate sampler by yourself.  Whichever way you decide to celebrate, it’s not a special occassion without great music.  Find the perfect track for your Pro or Anti-Valentine’s Day celebration.

There’s nothing better than sharing your life with someone…not that I would know, but that’s what these romantic comedies persuade us all to believe.  But really though, love is great once you find it.  So in honor of love, here are 20 tracks to get you feeling all warm inside and setting the mood.

    1. “Just One Look” -Doris Troy.  The oldest song on this playlist, it is the PERFECT pop, love song.  Soaring, bold, and bright, everything about this song brings love to life.
    2. “Melt” -Mystery Jets. “There’s an invisible line where your body meets mine, and crossing it feels like a drug.” -THAT is a line, boys.

    1. “Brighter Than Sunshine” -Aqualung.  Seriously, do I even have to explain?
    2. “I’m in Love Again” -The Animals.  For the blues lover on Valentine’s Day, Eric Bourdon’s slow burning croon makes love ok to gush about for tough guys.
    3. “Something” -The Beatles.  It is a classic.  It is the greatest love song of all time. Don’t even try to argue.
    4. “1 + 1” -Beyoncé.  Your man is probably no Jay-Z, nor is your woman Queen Bey, but do you even care?  This song is stunningly beautiful -bold enough to dance to, slow enough to touch to.

    1. “Everlasting Light” -The Black Keys.
    2. “Songbird” -Oasis.
    3. “I’ll Make Love to You” -Boyz ll Men.
    4. “Angels” -The xx.
    5. “2012” -Chris Brown.  Ok, maybe he doesn’t deserve a spot on this playlist, but have you HEARD this song?  This song inspires sex…really though.
    6. “Whatta Man (feat. En Vogue)” -Salt N Pepa.

  1. “Body & Soul (feat. Amy Winehouse) -Tony Bennett.
  2. “Crystal Ship” -The Doors
  3. “At Last” -Etta James

If you happen to be single this year, like me, BE YOUR OWN VALENTINE!  Or, hate on everyone -as usual.

    1. “Dancing on My Own” -Robyn.  Ladies (and gentlemen), turn this song on, crank it up, DANCE IT OUT. There is nothing better.

    1. “Cry Me a River” -Justin Timberlake.  Way over a break-up? Cry me a river, babe.
    2. “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” -John Mayer.  On the verge of calling it quicks? Talk it over with Mr. Mayer.
    3. “Not About Love.” -Fiona Apple.  “This is not about love. ‘Cause I am not in love.” Need I say more?
    4. “Bad Religion” -Frank Ocean.  I often find myself crying half way through this track, so…yeah.
    5. “You Oughta Know” -Alanis Morisette.  Male, female, it doesn’t matter. If you’ve been burned or if you’re in need for an instant burst of cardio, BLAST IT.
    6. “Survivor” -Destiny’s Child. “Now that you’re outta my life, it’s so much better.” Yes.
    7. “Cheated Hearts” -Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
    8. “You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Do As You’re Told)” -The White Stripes
    9. “Hypocritical Kiss” -Jack White. White asks, “Who the hell’s impressed by you?” with a bitterness that everyone can relate to…everyone.

  3. “Smile” -Lily Allen

The Author

Jessi was born and raised in Chicago, but she left her heart in NYC. She has been to more concerts than days of school, but somehow still made her way to university. Her idea of fun is an evening of karaoke to the worst songs of the '90s while a lit cigarette lies burning in the corner. She used to refer to herself as an "aspiring music journalist" but one day, she just woke up and decided she was one. That being said, she's always writing and always hungry for more. Anything of the 'rock' persuasion gets her motor running, ya dig? Follow her on Tumblr - https://hottrampinthecity.tumblr.com
