ARBITRAGE DVD Review
One of the best movies no one saw last year was Arbitrage, starring Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon. This gripping thriller featured a comeback worthy performance from Gere and top notch work from the young director and screenwriter, Nicholas Jarecki. What could have been a standard anti-Wall Street story becomes so much more by seamlessly blending the joint thriller plotlines of a shady company merger and a murder.
Given the anti-Wall Street climate the world is currently in, it takes a brave hand to craft the film that starts at that genre then becomes a complicated tale where you find yourself both rooting for Gere’s Robert Miller to succeed and feeling like a scumbag in the process. To give away some of the riveting plot twists and turns would be criminal. This film is definitely one to watch.
Richard Gere (Unfaithful) leads a stellar cast including Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking), Tim Roth (TV’s “Lie to Me”), Brit Marling (Another Earth), Laetitia Casta (Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life) and Nate Parker (Red Tails) in a pulse-pounding thriller about love, loyalty and high finance. Riveting and suspenseful, Arbitrage features Gere as a hedge-fund magnate whose fortunes turn when a deadly error threatens to destroy both his financial empire and his family, when it arrives on Blu-ray Disc, DVD and Digital Download December 21 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. The feature film debut from writer/director Nicholas Jarecki, Arbitrage continues to earn critical acclaim since its launch at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
Robert Miller (Gere) is a New York hedge-fund magnate who appears to have it all: money, power, a loving wife (Sarandon), and a devoted daughter (Marling) working by his side. But behind the gilded wall of his mansion, Miller is running on borrowed time, trying to unload his crippled trading company before his frauds are revealed. A deadly error throws Miller’s “perfect life” in a tailspin, raising the suspicions of a detective (Roth) and threatening the future of his financial empire. As the line blurs between what is right and wrong, legal and criminal, Miller is driven to desperate measures to protect the only thing more precious than his considerable fortune: his family.
