After sending us reeling with a behemoth of a trailer for Pacific Rim only days ago, Guillermo Del Toro doesn’t let up as he now provides inside commentary on the new preview.  Del Toro sat down with MTV’s Josh Horowitz to provide a shot-by-shot breakdown of all the glorious robot on monster mayhem.

Del Toro immediately gives us some juicy info on the Kaiju, describing a shot of a Kaiju carcass sprawled across an aircraft carrier, and the highly toxic ‘Kaiju blue’ that the monsters bleed when they fall.  Cause, you know, it’s not enough that they can destroy an entire city block in a single step, you also have to deal with the cascading bio-hazard if you manage to bring one down.  He then discusses the portal rift where the Kaiju emerge, and reveals what may be the most exciting insight of the commentary- we’ll get to see what’s on the other side.  Climactic robot battle on monster home world?  Are theatres pre-selling tickets yet?

We also get a closer look at our two neurally linked Jaeger pilots.  Charlie Hunnam’s and Rinko Kikuchi’s characters have both lost everything and they form a bond as they pilot the massive Jaeger.  Seems like there’s gonna be some sweet co-op action as each pilot only controls half the Jaeger and we watch the two learn to literally fight as one.

We’ll just have to wait and see what else Del Toro is going to roll out for us in the coming months.  For now though, massive monster fingernails in action and giant robot knuckle tattoos will have to suffice.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim opens July 12, 2013.

What do you think?  What insights from the commentary fired you up the most?
