HOMELAND Star Knocked Out in Vegas (Updated)
This is not a warrior’s tale.
In a bizarre match-up between 60 year old television actor Mandy Patinkin and boxer Juan Manuel Marquez, the former Chicago Hope star was touched by a sharp right that sent him toppling to the the mat like broken glass in the 6th round at the MGM Grand. There on the canvas Patinkin remained with his eyes closed and his spirit crushed until the final bell rang, closing out his odyssey.
Surprisingly, Patinkin had been considered the favorite — no doubt due to his extensive work on Broadway where he honed his superior footwork — but the much younger fighter rebounded from early trouble to shake Patinkin’s reality like the time Avigdor discovered Anshel’s forbidden secret.
No word on what drove Patinkin to enter the ring, but some speculate that Marquez may have killed his father, setting Patinkin off on the path toward revenge and strange justice.
When asked for their reaction to the former Dead Like Me star’s brutal humiliation, one man said “What’s boxing?”, while another simply cried out: “The actor!?”. Patinkin’s own camp, on the other hand, refused to cry for him, but they were clearly still stunned as calls were answered with confusion and stammering.
This bout marks the fourth fight between Patinkin and Marquez, and promoter Bob Arum seemed to indicate that, in his mind, withholding a fifth bout from the public might be criminal. One thing that may delay the remake though, is Patinkin’s role as Saul Berenson on the acclaimed Showtime drama Homeland. One imagines that he will have to take some time away from the show to train for his next bout and avenge this loss, though with his surprising love of the sweet science, it seems like nothing can keep him out of the ring.
Update: Apparently Manny Pacquiao is a beloved boxer who lost to Mr. Marquez. Mandy Patinkin, for all we know, is safe and sound and not presently itching for a shot at the middleweight crown. Many apologies for the confusion and the sloppy Yentil reference.
