HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER: “The Pre-Nup” Episode Recap

On tonight’s episode of How I Met Your Mother, one of these three couples: Ted and Victoria, Robin and Nick, and Barney and Quinn, break up. This starts what Ted described to his kids as “The Autumn of Breakups.” It all starts when Barney draws up a lengthy pre-nup for Quinn to sign. When she reads through it, she take offense to several outlines in it, and rallies up the girls to go against their men in a battle of the sexes.

Each couple is dealing with their various issues that leads you to thinking they could be the unlucky couple.  For Ted and Victoria, it’s Klous, Victoria’s ex, who Ted has welcomed into his home after he was fired and evicted. For Robin and Nick, they are dealing with an issue of Robin watching TV while they are in the bedroom. What Nick doesn’t know is that Robin is simply watching herself on the news, as it brings a certain turn on for her.  Barney and Quinn are obviously dealing with the pre-nup, and lastly, Marshall and Lily are dealing with the issue of Marshall being too rough when he plays with Marvin.

The episode revolves around these couples developing different issues, and it serves as a necessary evil. Look, let’s do the math. We know that Barney and Robin end up together, meaning that their respective relationships end.  We also know that based on the clues that we’ve received about the mom, that ultimately, it can’t be Victoria. So who ends up biting the bullet first in this case?

Well, it’s Barney and Quinn, and it’s a weird breakup, much like their relationship. I only assumed that the show would break the two up down the road, as their marriage became more realistic and omnipresent. Heck, I even thought it was possible that Barney and Quinn would break up just days before the wedding, and Robin would step in, making an impromtu moved. But no, instead, a simple pre-nup ends this marriage.

After both Quinn and Barney draw up their own pre-nups, they look at each other, and ask themselves if they trust one another. Barney says no, and so does Quinn. And that does it. Just like that, wedding off.

Really? That’s how you break these two up? You rush their relationship into the second half of last season, and now in just two epiosdes, you dump Quinn to the wasteside? Where have I seen that before? Oh yeah, just every relationship on the show for the last four seasons. Come on guys. It’s getting old.

Having said that, I am happy that Barney is a single guy now, as it opens things up for Robin again. Well, as soon as her and Nick break up. And that should take what, one, two more episodes? Or maybe they will spend the whole season together, have a weird breakup, then the finale will be another jump into the future. But maybe the wedding will finally actually happen this season. They are running out of time, so let’s hope it is.
