DEXTER: “Are You…” and “Sunshine and Frosty Swirl” Recap

Hello readers. I apologize for not getting the season premiere review of Dexter up sooner, but my friend who’s TV I steal for the show was out of town. So I just caught both episodes tonight, and wow, what a start to the season! I’ll start by saying a few words about the premiere, and then I will jump into tonight’s episode.

Of course the huge cliffhanger from last season was Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) catching her brother Dexter (Michael C. Hall) red handed killing the Zodiac Killer. Dexter fans spent the entire summer wondering what would come of this, and the result was Dexter convincing her that he killed him in self defense. She eventually believes him, but berates him with questions throughout the episode. Dexter is able to cover himself up, but it won’t last, as we will see later in the episode.

The show continues to keep it’s viewers on their toes, as one of the main characters from last season is gunned down early in the episode. That character is Detective Anderson (Billy Brown), who is shot after trying to help a man who had a body in his car.  I was bummed about this. I liked his character from last year, and I thought that they could have done alot with him in the show, but alas, he is no more.

While Debra and Dexter were cleaning up the crime scene at the village, Dexter’s infamous blood slide fell into a vent, and it was discovered by Captain LaGuerta (Lauren Velez).  Eventually, she figures out that this was the same slide that was the trademark of the Bay Harbor Butcher.  This should be a very interesting storyline to keep an eye on throughout the season. It won’t be long before she figures out that it wasn’t her friend Sgt. Doakes after all. The question is: will she be able to tie it to Dexter? If so, he could be in big trouble.

Wrapping up the premiere, Debra catches Dexter in a lie when he says he’s working late, when in actuality, he’s killing the man who murdered Mike. When Dexter returns to his apartment, he sees Debra sitting in front of a table with the blood slides and his tools. Now, he’s really been caught.  The premiere ends with him confessing to her that he is a serial killer. Where do we go from here?!? Well fortunately, you will find out now!

It takes Debra a while, and a few rounds of puking, to come to terms with the fact that Dexter is a killer, and she decides that she is going to help him. She forces him to move in with her, and she will keep an eye on him 24 hours a day. Yeah, that will work.  There’s no way that she will be able to control his desires to kill now that he’s been doing it for years. It’s too much a part of him, but she thinks she can change him.

The police are busy trying to track down a man that Dexter has already killed, and it looks like the villain of the season will be the head of the Ukrainian mob. Kind of out of the blue, but it will be very interesting to see how Dexter deals with having the mob on his ass.   Through two episodes, they have shown that Dexter will have alot on his plate, which is a good thing. After six seasons of no one knowing about Dexter’s secret without dying shortly after, I’m looking forward to seeing Dexter jumps through hoops to get away with his killings this year.

The second episode goes more into Louis (Josh Cooke), the boyfriend of Dexter’s nanny and Dexter’s co-worker. Let’s not forget that he had a cliff hanger of his own at the end of last season, as he sent the hand from the Ice Cream Truck killer to Dexter.  Louis cancels Dexter’s credit cards, and starts his attempt to destroy Dexter after he shot down his serial killer game.  Once Dexter catches on, he confronts Louis, and tells him he never wants to see him again. However, later in the episode, he is in Dexter’s apartment with the nanny, showing he has no fear of Dexter.

I’m really curious to see where this storyline goes. Louis is a smart guy. He may not be as physically imposing as Dexter, but mentally, he’s right there with him. Louis could simply turn out to be a thorn in Dexter’s side, but I hope they get aggressive with their battle. What if Louis finds something out about Dexter, and tells the nanny? Or Masuka? Could be veryyyy entertaining.

The episode wraps up with a felon who tells the cops that he would lead them to a place where he buried three bodies that were never found. Dexter and him start talking about how he was dealing with his inner anger, not realizing how much Dexter could relate to him. He tells Dexter that he is trying to uncover the bodies to clean his conscious, and release his anger. After looking at the sun, and telling Dexter he is going to miss this, he runs out in front of a truck, dying on impact. Dexter ends the episode by saying that the felon never shook his anger, and that he fears that he himself never will either.

So what can we expect this season? We know that for the first time, someone who Dexter sees everyday knows his secret. We know that Louis has it out for Dexter, and the two of them are due for a collision course at some point. And what about Captain LaGuerta? She’s a smart lady, and it would seem to be only a matter of time before she’s able to tie the slide to Dexter. And then all hell could break loose! I can’t wait!

What did you think of the first two episode? Are you excited for this season? How do you think it will go? Let us know in the comments!
