SDCC ’12: Kristal’s Comic-Con Preview

It’s finally upon us – San Diego Comic-Con! Personally, it’s my favorite time of year and I can’t wait to get back down to SD for all that geeky goodness! My comrade in arms, Brian Rudloff, posted his preview piece last night and he’s going to be busy busy busy. With so much going on, we’d need a team of twenty to cover everything but this year we’re making do with two (plus some additional floor help from our newest writer Caroline).

So what’s on my plate for the next 4 days? Check out a brief run through here:

Thursday Highlights:

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2I’ll be live-blogging the press conference (or trying too, we’ll see what the Wifi situation is like) with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and a few more key members from the cast. This is the last year they’ll be at the Con, barring any re-releases and anniversary events, so expect them to pull out all the stops to get the hype going.

Branded’s Jamie Bradshaw – I’ll be talking Jamie Bradshaw about this fall’s dystopian flick, Branded. Branded is a dark and mind-bending journey into a surreal, dystopian society where corporate brands have unleashed a monstrous global conspiracy to get inside our minds and keep the population disillusioned, dependent and passive.  One man’s Misha (Ed Stoppard) passion to unlock the truth behind the conspiracy will lead to an epic battle with the hidden forces that really control our world.

Branded is the vision of two widely respected marketing executives:  Jamie Bradshaw and Alexander Doulerain.  Bradshaw and Doulerain co-wrote, produced and directed.  Ed Stoppard, Leelee Sobieski, Jeffrey Tambor, Ingeborga Dapkunaite and Max Von Sydow star.

Disney’s Frankenweenie, OZ The Great and Powerful, and Wreck-it Ralph press conference – stay tuned for another live blog!

Hit & Run Preview Screening with Q&A with Dax Shepard, Tom Arnold, and Joy Bryant.

Friday Highlights:

LEGO Build Event and Art Installation – this will be outside the Con, but I’m hoping to check it out in the early stages and towards the end to get some neat before and after pictures.

ParaNorman – Kodi Smit-McPhee,Anna KendrickChristopher Mintz-PlasseTravis KnightChris Butler,Brian McLean, and Sam Fell discuss making their new stop-motion-animated comedy thriller, ParaNorman, made in 3D. Never-before-seen footage will be shown from the Laika movie that Focus Features is opening nationwide on August 17.

Robot Chicken Press conference – Co-creators/executive producers Seth Green and Matthew Senreich are joined by co-head writer/executive producer Tom Root, actor/writer Breckin Meyer, and writerMatthew Beans to discuss the Emmy-winning series. DC Entertainment chief creative officer Geoff Johns joins the panel to share insider scoop about the Robot Chicken DC Comics Special. Come watch a sneak peek and get your questions answered about Season Six. Keith Crofford, VP of production for Adult Swim, will moderate the panel.

Saturday Highlights:

Hall H all day! There will be panels covering Django Unchained, End of Watch, Silent Hill: Revelations 3D, Pacific Rim, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and Iron Man 3.

Sunday Highlights:

In years prior, this would be the day of Glee and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. However, this year it looks like this might just be my day to spend on the Comic-Con floor nabbing up geek swag and seeing the last of the cos-player outfits. I might stick around long enough to check out the Buffy Anniversary panel:

Buffy Turns 20: Celebrating 20 Years of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Once upon a time, Buffy Summers became the Slayer, the Chosen One who proved a young heroine could battle the forces of darkness instead of playing damsel in distress. Stars from the hit TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer(Nicholas BrendonClare Kramer) join forces with Dark Horse editor Scott Allie, writer/producer Jane Espenson, illustrator Georges Jentry, and the original Buffy herself (Kristy Swanson, star of the 1992 motion picture), not to mention a surprise guest or two, to celebrate 20 years of slayage.

I’ll be live-tweeting and instagramming as much as humanly possible (or as much as my iPhone battery will allow) so be sure you follow me @kristal_bailey and Instagram @screeninvasion!

With a soft spot for movies that fall into the “So Bad They’re Good” category, Kristal Bailey regularly watches B-movies, 80s comedies, and sci-fi from the 50s and 60s. She also refuses to grow up if that means she has to hide her love for Disney and Pixar films.

In her free time, she enjoys reading graphic novels or books that are soon to be turned into movies, watching hours and hours of television, and spending way too much time on Twitter.
