Yuna Nominated for MTV Iggy’s Best New Band In The World – Vote Now!

Having spent the spring opening for Raphael Saadiq, the summer in the studio working on her full-length album with long-time inspiration Pharrell Williams, and this past week opening for Ray LaMontagne to a rapt audience at Central Park Summerstage, Yuna defies genres with a voice IFC describes as, “a smile, if a smile could make a sound,” and Global Grind called, “the voice that will change America.”

Now, she has been chosen as part of MTV Iggy’s Best New Band In The World program. Soliciting input from the international MTV affiliates, audience suggestions, and music industry tastemakers, Yuna is one in just ten artists, narrowed down from over 600 emerging acts, vying to be the next global superstar.

Voting is now open at MTV Iggy. Vote and help spread the word using @MTVIggy and #BestNewBand on Facebook and Twitter.

Yuna recently released her own rendition of Nirvana’s “Come As You Are”. The music video, created wholly by the artist herself, has received praise from critics and music fans alike. Watch it here and see what others have to say…

“One has to appreciate a musician who can take a song originally driven by raging electric guitar and turn it into something delicately beautiful. Malaysian singer-songwriter Yuna does just that.” – Billboard

“It sure takes lots of musical guts to take on one of the most loved and influential rock songs of the last twenty years. But that doesn’t deter Yuna from covering one of those classics she loves and make it her own….beautiful, heartfelt and accomplished.” – Arjan Writes

“In a song that is typically characteristic of its grunge and grime qualities, Yuna strips away the metal and delivers a lyrically striking song at its core… both haunting and delicately beautiful.” – Baeble
“Nirvana is definitely my all-time favorite band & their music is sacred to me so I usually don’t like covers but there’s no denying the fact that this is the best “Come As You Are” cover I’ve ever heard, it’s as haunting as it is sweet. Beautiful… ” – YouTube user bgakiraknoxville

“Wow, I love Nirvana so much, and learned to play this song back when I was first learning guitar… but this cover gives me chills. I think Kurt would have approved. Thumbs up!” – YouTube user ncsastudentGrowing up in Malaysia, Yuna was first inspired by the universal appeal of acts like No Doubt, The Cranberries, and Fiona Apple. At the age of 19, while in law school, she picked up a guitar and began to write fervently. She joined various art groups and soon discovered her love and natural talents for sketching, fashion, photography, web design and graphic design. She took her passion for fashion to the next level when she became part owner of the clothing shop I Am Jet Fuel, a successful couture boutique in Malaysia. A self-professed “tech geek”, Yuna even created an instructional video showing viewers how to set up their own home recording studio.

Yuna’s hotly tipped US debut EP Decorate is out now digitally via FADER Label. Stay tuned for more information regarding her debut full-length, set for release in February of 2012.

LA residents can also catch Yuna at Bardot on October 24th for School Night hosted by Chris Douridas.
